Safety & Responsible Use
Effective: 25 August 2026
Great pizza involves real heat and real equipment. CrustWise can help you plan and cook, but it cannot observe your kitchen or replace safe judgment.
1. Ovens, grills and heat
- Ovens, broilers/grills, pizza ovens and their surrounding surfaces can cause severe burns and fires.
- Never touch heating elements, oven interiors, stones, steels, trays or cookware until they have cooled sufficiently.
- Use suitable heat-resistant protection and tools when handling hot equipment.
- Keep combustible materials, children and pets away from hot cooking equipment.
- Never place any part of your body inside a hot oven or pizza oven.
- Do not leave cooking equipment unattended where the manufacturer or safe practice requires supervision.
2. Pizza steels, stones and cookware
- Use only equipment rated for your appliance, temperature and cooking method.
- Pizza steels, stones and cast-iron cookware can remain dangerously hot long after cooking ends.
- Heavy accessories can cause injury or damage if dropped or if oven racks are overloaded. Observe manufacturer weight and placement instructions.
- Avoid thermal shock. Do not expose hot stones, glass or other vulnerable materials to sudden temperature changes unless explicitly permitted by the manufacturer.
3. Broiler/grill and high-temperature recommendations
High-temperature finishing techniques can increase fire, smoke and burn risks. Use a broiler/grill or other high-heat mode only if your appliance and cookware are designed for it. Maintain required clearances from heating elements and follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding rack position, door position and supervision.
4. Gas, flame and ventilation
If you use gas or live-flame equipment, follow all manufacturer instructions for ignition, ventilation, fuel connections and outdoor/indoor use. Never use equipment indoors if it is designated for outdoor use. If you suspect a gas leak, stop using the equipment and follow the relevant emergency and manufacturer guidance.
5. Food safety
- Use ingredients that have been stored safely and are suitable for consumption.
- Follow applicable food-safety guidance for perishable toppings, meat, dairy, eggs and other ingredients requiring temperature control.
- Prevent cross-contamination by cleaning hands, surfaces and utensils appropriately.
- Do not rely solely on an app timer to determine whether food is safe to eat.
6. Fermentation
Fermentation estimates are approximations affected by ingredient condition, yeast or starter activity, temperature measurement, dough composition and many other factors. Inspect dough yourself. If food appears spoiled, contaminated or otherwise unsafe, discard it.
7. Equipment-aware recommendations
CrustWise may adapt recommendations based on equipment information you provide. The app cannot verify that the information is correct, that equipment is functioning properly, or that a particular configuration is safe. Never exceed a manufacturer’s stated temperature, operating mode, placement, load or accessory limits because of an app recommendation.
8. Timers, notifications and Apple Watch
Timers and notifications are convenience tools. Delivery can be delayed, suppressed or missed because of device settings, battery state, connectivity or software behavior. Do not rely on a notification as the sole safeguard against burning, fire or other hazards. Remain appropriately attentive to active cooking.
9. Children and supervision
Cooking activities involving heat, blades, electrical appliances, gas, heavy cookware or other hazards require appropriate adult judgment and supervision. CrustWise is not a substitute for adult supervision.
10. Reporting a safety issue
If you believe CrustWise has produced an unsafe recommendation, stop following it and contact us. Please describe the recipe, equipment, relevant settings and recommendation so we can investigate.
